Evaluation of Talk Show

Unit 37 Television Talk Show Evaluation

In this assessment, I will be critically analyzing my television production.

Self-Evaluation: Comments from others, e.g. audience, peers, tutors

I have asked three individuals to watch my talk show. One individual enjoyed my editing. He found part of my show amusing which is good to hear. He would enjoy the show more if I had prepared the script more. If I had a proper topic to talk about, perhaps all the talent’s qualities could have been rained out. My show was scraped from the ground in the respects of poor script preparation.

Research Preparation: Preparation, rehearsal, recording, time management, teamwork, Own work

Preparing for this show was very interesting. I conducted a series of questionnaires and focus groups with young individuals whom I thought would be part of my target audience. The feedback allowed me to continue with my original idea of making a pre-watershed show on channel 4. My results showed that youngsters love channel 4 due to the theme of the channel, containing funny shows. Channel 4 is designed for the young aged people. I conducted three rehearsals, so I get to grips with what I was doing.

Purpose:

What was your original aim? Where do you think it should be shown? How close was the final product to your proposed idea? Did you achieve your purpose?

My original aim was to create an interesting themed talk show, unique to the market. My first intentions in the pre-production process was to invite non-celebrity guests on my show, evolving the talk show criteria.

The tonight show was a success as it harmonized with my pre-productive plans, it allowed me to stick to my current plans of a time, date and television channel. Those plans being a show aired on Thursdays, 8pm (pre-watershed), on channel 4. My show has no offensive language used, my guests are dressed correctly so my show is suitable for my chosen target audience.

The final product was exact to how I ever wanted it to be. Even my green screen idea worked perfectly, my show looked professional, therefore looking good which allows an audience viewing interest to be maintained. The background portrays the city of Birmingham which is appropriate as the location of the studio is in Birmingham. It worked very well with the show's ethic.

My shows purpose was to inform the audience of current affairs through social media and the activities of young people in Britain. My purpose was certainly achieved as I conversed with my guests, to get to know what they got up to in their free time. As my guests are part of the Demographic and Psychographic category (D,E Mainstreamers and Explorers) their social media habits reflect that. For example, my two guests occasionally research conspiracy theories, topics planted into their minds through posts they have seen on social media.

Representation Issues

Did you give positive messages...or negative...were you biased? Were the people being interviewed represented fairly? Was the language of your script appropriate for your target audience? Was it realistic when compared to a similar professional product?

My messages were mixed. A few controversial conversations were made discussing views of flat Earth society and the moon landing which were biased. This is because we all concluded that we were against the realism of both views. If members of my tv audience are for the ideas of flat earth society and the realism of the moon landing, it may cause queries. It could possibly offend them as I used the quote “flat earth being a silly idea”.

My guests were represented fairly. On screen, they were typical teenagers who are individuals who play games or enjoy football with their friends, being up to date with society and so forth. They wore average clothing which is included in the many style's teens wear in today's world. They were two individuals with two different personalities, one being more outgoing and social, the other, a more introverted soul. However, they shared the same views and opinions, agreeing on most matters.

I was aware that my show was a pre-watershed production. Therefore, it halted me to go further with any inappropriate speech. My script was clean and well prepared so I could represent myself as a serious presenter and respect the channels ident. My guests were informed that my show was to be cleanly spoken production.

My show could make it on to a mainstream channel if I had a more solid preparation. My idea was not fully worked around, having quite poor research and planning but when we were filming the final recording, my natural ability to forge a conversation worked, this was clear the recording if you watch it.

Technical and Aesthetic Issues

The microphone was at a clear and appropriate level. There were 4 technical hiccups which caused my mic to cut off for about a couple of milliseconds which would cut a bit of my speech off. If you were to listen carefully, the audio error sounds like a simple glitch but it does not dis attract from the whole show itself.

My editing was at a very good standard. My background looked realistic, the talents faces were in good colour and proportion on screen. I am satisfied with the overall flow of my show.

In terms of variety, I would honestly say that my show was just about watchable. If I would have planned better, I would have had a more enjoyable show, however, I do like the aspect of a game show and a talk show marriage, spin and answer I believe would just about hold my audience on until the end of the show. ‘Spin n’ answer’ is a nice way to get my guests to do something great for a good cause. My guest Nolo had won 30 tickets to the FA cup Final at Wembley and he donated it to Cancer Research. This would mean that people from London who were suffering with cancer (who are involved with cancer research) are able to see the football game. This aspect of the show was very nice.

Overall, the final piece looked great. My shots (Wide, close-up and double) looked great. They allowed me to be versatile when picking a background, suitable to the topic. My shots were in focus, fully white balanced and proportioned nicely to allow good headspace for the talent(s). The shots allowed a conversation to fully flow, whenever there was a group discussion, a wide would be shown. My vision mixer Ethar did a brilliant job of following a conversation.

Conventions/Narrative

How does it compare to a similar professional product? What advantages do professionals have over you?

Visually, my product looks really good, and it contains social media promotions which television shows also include. The visuals look realistic (in terms of green screen background). The show is edited the same way a professional production would be.

The advantages professionals have is (1) experience. Profession shows are presented by individuals who have had years of experience presenting or creating television shows. (2) Average equipment. I have to make the most out of the limited quality resources I am provided. My studio small and my equipment is mid-range. However, I am very proud that I were able to create a fantastic looking show, making my studio look better than it actually was.

Own Performance… Self-evaluation

As I was using a public Studio, I was aware that I must manage my time well. My entire recording was 10 minutes but my pre-production time (on the studio floor) consisted of 20 minutes setting up the whole studio, laying it out to my studio floor plan specification.

We had some practical issues. For instance, two microphone accessories disappeared so we had to quickly think of a solution. My floor manager suggested that I should find two clips (black in colour) and use them to replace the tie clips which had disappeared.

I worked very well with my team. As a team we had done a production meeting 1 day prior to the shoot. In this meeting I discussed various responsibilities the members of my team had upon them. This meeting helped the ‘strong heart’ production group to be fully aware of what they were doing on the day of the shoot. This removed the chances of a stressful experience.

Deadlines were met. I finished my final shoot 1 week prior to the deadline. This gave me another week for me to engage in the post production process. I feel that my time management allowed me to meet deadlines and it fully gave me the confidence to be able to create a truly fantastic show.

In conclusion

I am satisfied with my show overall. I have analyzed my show thoroughly and I feel I have determined the pros and the cons of my show.
